What the record says about Monkey

Its terms say users must be 18 or over, but nothing verifies that, and the design and audience skew markedly younger. The Washington Post reported that around 2% of its iOS reviews described unwanted sexual experiences — a figure widely cited as a factor in Apple removing it. Child-safety organisations including Internet Matters and Bark maintain standing guidance for parents about it, which is not something that exists for services where the age question is settled.

What Spoqi does about age

A checkbox at the door is worth what any self-declaration is worth, and Spoqi has one like everybody else. The difference is what happens after it.

  • Age is estimated while you are on camera, from your own video, alongside the check for nudity. A confirmed reading under eighteen ends the chat and blocks the device for good.
  • It acts on a confirmed reading, not one frame. Age estimation is least reliable in exactly the band that matters, so a single low frame is a warning — one frame is also a photograph on a wall, or a model getting it wrong.
  • Nudity is cut in about a second, by a model running in your own browser, before the other person has seen much of anything.

This is a removal rather than a refusal, and it is worth being straight about the gap: somebody under eighteen does reach a camera briefly before being cut off. A check at the door would be stronger, and it is the change we would make next.
