What "free" usually means
Almost every video chat service calls itself free, and most of them are telling a version of the truth. It is worth knowing which version before you start, because the bill tends to arrive at the interesting moment rather than at the door.
- Coins, gems or tokens. Chatting is free; something you will want within ten minutes is not. Common in the app-based services.
- Free, but the filters are not. Matching by gender or country is the usual paywall, because it is the feature people will pay for.
- A free trial that wants a card. If a random video chat asks for card details before showing you anybody, that is the product.
- Adverts. Fair enough, and at least it is visible.
- You are the product. The least visible one. Trackers, third-party analytics and data sold on — free at the till, paid for elsewhere.
None of these are scandals. They are business models, and a service with no business model has its own problem, which is further down this page.

That is the whole list. There is no second page of terms where it stops being true.
So who is paying for it
We are. Servers cost money, the media server costs money and automated moderation costs money per frame, and none of that is covered by advertising or by anything you might buy, because there is nothing to buy.
That is worth saying plainly rather than dressing up as generosity, because it has a consequence you should know about: a service with no revenue is a service nobody can promise will still be here in two years. We have no plans to close and no intention of quietly introducing coins later. But a site that tells you it is free forever is telling you something it cannot know.
What it does buy you meanwhile: nothing about you is worth collecting, because there is no advertiser to sell it to. The privacy policy is short for the same reason.
How to check any of this yourself
Not just here — this works on any service claiming to be free.
- Open it in a private window. If it will not show you a single person before asking for an email, the sign-up is the product.
- Look for the word "unlock". It is the reliable tell for a coin model, and it is usually attached to filters.
- Open your browser's network tab. Count the requests going to domains that are not the site you are on. That is the number that tells you who else is in the room. On Spoqi it is zero — we count how busy the site is on our own server, and the privacy page says exactly what that amounts to.
- Read what the privacy page says is kept, not what the front page says is free. The two are usually written by different people.
