Spoqi vs Omegle: what happened, and what replaced it

Omegle is not a live service. It shut down on 8 November 2023, after fourteen years, days after settling a lawsuit brought by a woman who had been matched with an adult man on it as an eleven-year-old. Comparing a working site to it is a bit unfair — so the useful comparison is not feature against feature, but against the reasons it closed.

What actually happened

Founder Leif K-Brooks published a closing note that did not hide behind anything. "There can be no honest accounting of Omegle without acknowledging that some people misused it, including to commit unspeakably heinous crimes," he wrote. The immediate cause was A.M. v. Omegle, which sought $22 million and settled shortly before the site went dark.

Omegle's design was of its time: no account, no age check beyond a checkbox, and moderation that never caught up with the scale of the problem. The first two of those are things Spoqi also does — and that is exactly why the third one has to be different.

Where Spoqi is genuinely different

Spoqi keeps the parts that made Omegle appealing — no sign-up, one stranger at a time, leave whenever — and puts the weight on what is checked while you are on camera.

Checked in the browser, not only on a server

A model runs on your own device and watches your camera. If it sees nudity it cuts your video within about a second — before the other person has seen much of anything. Those frames never leave your machine. A second check runs on our servers, and that is the one that issues bans, because anything running on somebody's own computer can be modified by them.

Reporting that still works after you have pressed Next

Most reports happen after the fact — you move on, then decide what you saw was worth flagging. Spoqi's report button keeps working, and shows you the last few people you spoke to with a still from each chat so you can point at the right one. Those pictures stay in your browser and are never uploaded, even with the report.

What Spoqi does not have

Omegle at its peak had enormous numbers of people online. Spoqi is new and the pool is small, which is the single biggest practical difference and there is no way to spin it. If you press next at three in the morning you may wait a while.

There is also no interest matching and no text-only mode. Spoqi is one thing: video, with a stranger, now.
