Spoqi

Spoqi vs Monkey: the age problem, plainly

Monkey is a random video chat app aimed at a young audience, and that is not an incidental detail — it is the entire comparison. Apple removed it from the App Store over safety concerns. It remains available on Android and through a browser.

What the record says

Monkey's terms say users must be 18 or over, but there is no verification behind that, and the app's design and audience skew markedly younger. The Washington Post reported that around 2% of its iOS reviews described unwanted sexual experiences — a figure widely cited as a factor in Apple's removal.

Child-safety organisations including Internet Matters and Bark maintain standing guidance for parents about it, which is not something that exists for services where the age question is settled.

What "checked continuously" means here

A checkbox at the door is worth what any self-declaration is worth, and Spoqi has one like everybody else. The difference is what happens after it: while you are on camera, the automated check estimates age as well as looking for nudity, and a confirmed read under eighteen ends the chat and blocks the device for good.

We are deliberate about the threshold. Age estimation is least reliable in exactly the band that matters, so the check acts on a confirmed reading across consecutive samples rather than a single frame — one frame is a photograph on a wall, or a model getting it wrong.

This is a removal rather than a refusal: somebody under eighteen does reach a camera briefly before being cut off. A check at the door would be stronger, and it is the change we would make next.

Who each is for

If you are under 18, neither of these is for you, and Monkey being easy to get onto is a reason to be more careful about it rather than less. Spoqi is an adult service and enforces that as well as an anonymous service can.
