Spoqi vs Chatroulette: two sites using the same safety technology

Chatroulette is the original — launched in November 2009 by Andrey Ternovskiy, then a seventeen-year-old in Moscow. It went through a well-documented period where the experience was dominated by people exposing themselves, and it rebuilt around automated moderation rather than closing.

The honest headline: the same moderation vendor

Chatroulette moderates using Hive's AI, which has processed hundreds of millions of video frames from the platform. Spoqi uses Hive too. Any comparison claiming we detect nudity and they do not would be simply false, and you would find out within a few minutes of trying both.

What differs is the arrangement around it.

A check that happens before anything is transmitted

The meaningful difference is where the first check runs. Server-side moderation, however good the model, samples video that has already been sent — the other person has seen it by the time anything is judged. Spoqi also runs a detector in your own browser, on frames that have not been transmitted yet, and cuts the outgoing video in about a second. It is not a replacement for the server check, which is what actually issues bans; it is a filter in front of it.
